This 38 special was passed down to me and in honor of my father-in-law, I wanted to recreate this for him. It is really old and even has the lead bullets. The AAA game model was created in Maya and Zbrush and textured in Substance Painter. For this project, I really wanted to stop and focus on the material creation. Everything was created by hand (not a single base/smart material was harmed in the making) using a filter-based approach, instead of using fill layers like I normally would. I used filters and complex masking to get all the details. This new approach really stuck out to me because while it will take some time to build up the material once you have one you can easily create a smart material and replicate it for other materials in the future. All you would have to do is change the color of your first layer and everything would update since it all passes through each other.
A major goal was to do as much as I could without any hand painting and I can safely say 99% of it is all procedural. It was a challenge, but I really enjoyed diving deep into Substance Painter.

A huge shoutout to https://www.artstation.com/trigon_art who has an amazing tutorial on where I got the main inspiration for this technique. Please check out his work as he goes more in-depth and is a master of this technique.
